Friends of Cedar Creek work to ensure the highest water quality
for Cedar Creek and to protect and preserve its watershed including
geologic features, native plants and animals.
This photo shows just a few of the Great Blue Heron nests in Cedar Creek's 60+ heron
nesting site!
You've probably seen these giant birds overhead. Adult wingspan is six to eight feet, and
they fly with neck snug and legs outstretched. They often make an "ONK!" call in flight.
You see their straight, tall posture in area pondsides, wetlands or stream edges. But few
have seen the tree-top holonies where these magnificent birds spend the spring and summer
raising their young.
The Cedar Creek heronry is sequestered in the scenic river portion of Cedar Creek,
surrounded by privately-held forest land.
Friends of Cedar Creek's sister organization ACRES, Inc. has recently added nine
important acres to make a 20-acre permanent reserve for the heronry. More land will be
purchased as funds become available, protecting this wonderful feature of our Cedar Creek
Wildlife habitat. CCWP made a $1,000 donation in June 2000, and we would like to do much
more!
